First things first — Is Montenegro a beach country?

Yes — and not just any beach destination.

Montenegro’s soul lives on its coast. Around 94% of travelers come here drawn by the salty breeze, old towns by the sea, quiet stone piers, and that perfect hidden spot for swimming.

This tiny country packs an incredible range of beaches:

  • 13 kilometers of soft, golden sand in Ulcinj

  • colorful pebbles and rocky coves from Bar to Budva

  • and the secret, fjord-like beauty of Boka Bay, where Kotor hides some of the most peaceful, authentic swimming spots in all of the Adriatic.

If you’re curious where the Kotor locals actually go to swim — far from the crowds, close to home — this Kotor beach guide is a great place to start. And yes, there’s a custom Google Map at the end to help you find them all.

So… Can you swim in Kotor?

If you’ve only seen photos of Kotor’s stone walls, bell towers, and cruise ships, it’s easy to wonder — is there even a beach here? The answer is yes, but not in the way you might expect.

Kotor isn’t your typical coastal town. It’s a place where culture meets the sea — a UNESCO treasure where about 75% of Montenegro’s cultural heritage lives. But the sea isn’t just the backdrop. It’s part of everyday life here. And yes, you can absolutely swim in Kotor — if you know where (and when) to go. That’s where this guide comes in.

Are there beaches in Kotor?

Yes! You just have to look a little closer.

While Kotor may not have long stretches of sand like some other Montenegro travel hotspots, it offers something even better — small, authentic, local places to swim, sunbathe, and unwind. Some are public, some are hidden, and many are just used by Kotor locals, right off the promenade.

1. Kotor Public Beach (500m from Old Town)

Just a short walk from the city walls towards Dobrota, you’ll find Kotor’s main public beach — a sandy, family-friendly spot with a few cafés, fast-food kiosks, and shops nearby.

It’s lively, convenient, and easily accessible — though not very private since it’s right by the road.

Tip: For a quieter experience, keep walking along the Dobrota promenade!
Important to know: Most beaches in this area don’t offer sunbed rentals, so bring your own towel, umbrella, or beach gear.

2. Hidden beaches near the Aquarium (2km from Old Town)
